ok so to all who r reading this-i am not from hawai'i, but "yook" really is the incorrect way...altho english is my first language, i think that all of us have ruined the language and cultures of other countries..im from american samoa and americans say samoa "suh moh uh" when really its "sah mo ah" also, knowing some of the hawaiian elders who have grown up hawaiian, they cringe at yook ooh lay lee. personally, i think yook ooh lay lee sounds like a dirty word, and while i dont like the american way, hawai'i is a part of america, so shouldnt we all just say it respectfully instead of making urselfs look like haole (white/american) tourists? maybe something to think about

Actually salt should give more like 75% RH, but if it's correct at 75% will it be correct at 45%? The answer is no, as I've found by checking three hygrometers: with salt water they read 75%, 78%, 85%, and in room humidity they read 43%, 29%, 32% -- the two that were higher in the salt water test were (much) lower at room humidity. It turns out you can do a 2-point calibration using a different substance to give a controlled 33% RH. I might try that.

My first uke has geared tuners which work well. I play guitar also, so this is what I'm used to. My new uke has friction tuners. I'm still getting used to them but they seem to be doing the job. I may replace them with fancier friction tuners to dress the uke up a bit...

I don't care much how people pronounce it. I know what they mean either way and I would hate to be "that guy" who corrects people's pronunciation. There is the Hawaiian way and there the a wider, more common usage. Take you pick. If I was going to be "that guy" I would have to gripe about every other word spoken in the US and Canada by so called "English" speakers. But I am not going to go around correcting people who use common pronunciation when everyone knows exactly what they mean, and almost no one knows there is another "correct" way to say a word. Like schedule. Or vitamin. Or aluminum. Or...

I own one of these, and I love both the sound and feel of it. I like its sound better than any other uke I have. For differences in sound and feel, I also own a Kanilea Soundmonster soprano, an Applause soprano, a Hamano soprano that sounds very much like a vintage Martin, a soprano Ohana with an extended tenor-length neck, a concert Flea with the rosewood fingerboard, a Fluke, a Kala Mango tenor, and a Lanikai baritone. They all have unique qualities, but I believe the KoAloha is superior.

I've had a Kamaka tenor (the same model) for four years. The sound has improved and the lacquer odor is gone. The extra string tension took a bit of adjustment.
It is sweet and loud, as loud as my National, with that great koa sound. I got rid of my Martin soprano as it no longer measured up in sound quality, but it was easier to play.
I have tried various strings. I used Ko'olau gold for a couple of years andd I'm now using Aquila Nylgut.
I'm not sure which I prefer, the Aquila's seem louder and the Ko'olau seem sweeter. It's so subjective.
I've tried GHS on my National and they were a mistake. I've used Aquila's on it but I'm going to try the Ko'olau. On my Kepasa Little Mac I only have used Aquila.

Just received a KPK deluxe tenor today. It looks beautiful and I think it will play great, once I change out the ridiculous metal C string. Why do people metal strings on ukes? All it does is create a bunch of atonal vibration and buzz. I'm relatively new to the uke world, but I don't understand this thought process. Thanks, enjoy your site.

So how do you like your DaSilva? I had aquired the DaSilva #34 which sounds superb! In fact I have quite a few superb ukesand I just started playing about 8 months:

Flea concert Koa with pick-up, Flea concert Mahogany, Mainland mahogany pineapple, 1950's Matin concert and tenor (you just can't believe the near perfect condition they are in), Tom Guy tenor cigar box- great sound, just aquired a Koaloha extended neck concert- the one with the crown look bridge, and a superb William King #24 extended neck soprono adi top/ walnut back and sides and a William King tenor #44 adi top and great Koa back and sides with a MISI pick up. The funny thing is, I not a good player at all, but I love them and I'm off to hunt for a Kamaka concert. Best of wishes- I was going to get a paddle boat , but they never answered my emails.

How great! This is the second random webpage I've read today that talks about making your own Ukulele. I'm going to take that as a sign from the Ukulele Gods. It seems like playing "Would you like to swing on a star" on a little ukulele guitar of my own making would be even more satisfying than it is on my Lanakai. Thanks for the post!

To Crystal: most solid koa ukes are made in the USA: in Hawaii. Buying an all solid koa uke such as a Koaloha, Kamaka is buying a USA made uke.

I have one of these. They're quite nice. Fast, accurate, readable in any lighting conditions, and they fit in one's pocket or gig bag much easier than other, bulkier clip-ons.

The big drawback? The clip itself is quite flimsy and fiddley. In fact, mine broke at the hinge just a few weeks ago. I've got it sort of jury-rigged together, but still... bummer. :(

I believe the mini-EP is being sold at the Tsukiji Restaurant in the Ala Moana Shopping Center (Honolulu, HI) through 9/17, daily from 11am-2pm. Part of the restaurant is set aside as the "Annon Cafe", with educational displays, etc. related to the 750th/120th Anniversaries.

It may still be available at the Honpa Hongwanji temple at 1727 Pali Highway, for those of you in Hawaii.

Jake performed the two pieces from the mini-EP during the Hongwanji's celebration banquet at the Hilton Hawaiian Village this past Saturday. It was great to hear him again. I heard him several years ago but honestly wasn't that into his style of playing. He seems to have "matured", and I liked it enough that I bought a disc for myself. My daughter liked one of the other pieces he performed, "Let's Dance", and asked me to find it.

He also played a duet "Piano Forte", with Kirk Shimabukuro (not related), who's exceptionally talented too.
